They drove into the visitorsâ parking lot shortly before ten. Phase two of construction appeared to be well underway, and just as the report had said, the Phase One apartmentsâthe units on the lower floorsâwere mostly rented. Jarred was surprised to see soccer balls, tricycles, and even hula hoops on many of the balconies.
âI didnât think families were necessarily your target demographic here?â
âNeither did I.â
The front desk was manned until 8 pm every night; the receptionist welcomed them warmly and handed over the keys to the upper-level units. The empty lobby was extraordinarily elegant, with plush accent rugs covering the stone floors and radiantly white walls. Everything down here seemed spotless; the seating area near the front desk looked like something out of an interior design magazine.
âWell, this area looks just like the brochures, anyway,â Marlene remarked. âShall we start with the penthouse?â
âHow about you check out the penthouse, and Iâll start on the sixth floor?â
âSure. Just text me when youâre done, or if I get done faster, Iâll text you.â
Jarred highly doubted that Marlene would be faster, lugging around all that gear. But he could also take the opportunity to call Finn. Actually, he probably ought to do that first thing.
He dialed Finnâs number when he stepped out on the sixth floor.
âSo the rumors are true! Consider me shocked. Whenâd you get back, man?â
âA week ago. Hey, speaking of rumors, I hear youâre finally settling down, hm? Congrats!â
âYeah, thanks, man. I was shittinâ myself worrying that Marie would shoot me down. Weâve been together so long, and⦠I dunno, hasnât always been roses and sunshine, has it?â
Hadnât it? Jarred couldnât really remember.
âSo, you got time for lunch today or what?â
He knew Marlene was meeting a friend for lunch after this, and there was no way heâd be able to keep his hands to himself around Rose, so lunch with her was definitely out. Just thinking about her lips⦠âUm, sure, yeah. Iâm out and about at the moment, be free by noon.â
âPerfect! Iâll book us a table. Indian or Thai?â
âThai.â
âRight, letâs do that place by Tower Gate. Brand-new, not on the fortieth floor or whatever. Really nice food, classy place. We can meet outside Campbell at one if you likeâyouâre still working for your dad, arenât you?â
Jarred agreed and hung up. Okay, one thing ticked off the list. Now for the real reason he was here. He glanced around in the hallway, which was already a whole lot shabbier than the lobby. There were four units on this floor: two two-bedrooms, two three-bedrooms. He walked up to the nearest door and unlocked it.
